„The beauty of Vojvodina lies in the beauty of the plain.

On the juncture of the big European rivers, among marshes and swamps, in bird’s nests and in floodable lands, where, however, droughts still threaten with cracked mud, people have chosen to settle in their colourful multicultural multitudes, representing the crown oasis of Europe. Her crossroads.

Zamurović and Ibrajter searched for over two years for the beauty of landscapes, the dignity of baroque and ornate cities, for oil springs and geometric fields.

They found people from lively Flemish paintings there, bass and accordion players, relaxed donkey racers, donkey’s heads tied in bouquets, and old ladies pulling ropes in honour of the harvest. They saw new brides in white fairy dresses being photographed next to the spring of life (the village fountain), and medicinal swimmers relaxing in the mud of the Rusanda waters.

With their winged camera they captured a nest of herons eggs hatching in the reeds, white beaked birds in the hidden heart of Carska Bara (Tsar’s Marsh), and once, in a uniquely lucky case, our man with the camera, Dragoljub Zamurović, flew over the imperial eagle on his dragon photographing it as it flew out of the Danube forests.

The flying photographer, Dragoljub Zamurović saw lakes from the sky and swamps and marshes where man has never set foot. They lie there the way demiurgos (the great creator) made them.

There used to be 475,000 horses and a million foals here. Now we see the modern horseman having a shave in front of a mirror by the stable door through which the lonely white horse is peering. And in the village of Gaj, because of the cult of the horse, the local people organise one of the many fijakerada, the traditional black fiacre was painted white to mach the horses. Just like in a dream.

The inhabitants of Vojvodina love organising all kinds of competitions. They are always funny, accompanied by clownish grimaces, but also serious in their own way. These are competitions for the biggest pumpkin, the kobasicijada (sausage festival), the slaninijada (bacon festival) – sometimes it seems that gastronomic festivals are replacing old folklore from centuries past.

A great deal was seen through the camera’s eye: beautiful villages, monasteries, vladicanski dvori (bishop’s palaces), churches and cathedrals as well as the sphinx at the entry to the Bogoslovija in Karlovac.

The lightening flashes above Subotica at night and the town houses in Sombor and Zrenjanin are like palaces. The windows in Sremski Karlovci are plated in curved iron, dogs stand in the kibicfenster in Vršac, and the foundations of the Tsar’s palace from Roman times will be seen in Sremska Mitrovica. Novi Sad, seen from the fortress, lies on the Danube, as though it were asleep.

I have never before seen such original photographs of Vojvodina.“
